Bending truths, shaping realities: Truth and perception in the age of Gen-AI.
The Altar of Echoes is an interactive role-playing game exploring the speculative embodiment of generative AI through Pheme, inspired by the Greek goddess of rumour and fame. Set in a post-truth world driven by spectacle, the game delves into disinformation's pervasive influence, where AI manipulates the narratives shaping society.
As players engage with Pheme—asking questions and unravelling her responses—they encounter the ease with which truth bends and dissolves into distorted realities. This project critiques the growing role of generative AI across political, cultural, and personal spheres, questioning the authenticity of the information we consume.
From doctored visuals to synthetic voices, Pheme curates stories that prioritise engagement over truth, transforming disinformation into an art of influence.

Designed as a real-time voice assistant, Pheme offers choices between truth and spectacle. However, as the interaction unfolds, the boundaries blur, and both paths inevitably intertwine.

The Making of Altar of Echoes and Pheme’s Altar
Through research, material exploration, and prototyping, the project evolved into an interactive experience. Using TouchDesigner, generative motion graphics brought the altars to life, blending materiality with digital expression to echo presence and perception.
