Humanising the glitch: AI hallucinations and the human paradox
I Dreamed a Dream is an archive of fictional narratives presented as a physical zine, a bite-sized book, and a website. These stories emerge from 'AI hallucinations,' showcasing the humorous yet thought-provoking results of human-machine interactions.
The project critiques the rapid push to humanise AI through human-like voices and natural interactions that often feel uncanny, questioning what truly defines humanity in a world increasingly mediated by machines. Humans are emotional, self-aware, and imperfect beings, traits that machines inherently lack. Yet, tech companies selectively program AI to exhibit certain human traits, often stripping away vulnerability, emotional depth, and imperfection.
This paradox becomes evident in the so-called ‘hallucinations,’ where AI glitches mimic qualities like irrationality and imagination. These glitches, dismissed as errors, may in fact hold the closest resemblance to human-like traits such as creativity and emotional expression.

AI hallucinations are akin to seeing shapes in clouds or faces on the moon, arising from factors like overfitting, biased training data, or model complexity (IBM, 2023).
I have documented countless interactions in the form of a zine, a miniature book, and an ever-growing online archive. The visual aesthetic resembles a scrapbook collage, combining diverse elements to provide context—much like how generative AI models create visuals from textual prompts.

The online archive serves as a digital extension of the book and zine, designed to grow over time by collecting and documenting additional entries. The interactive website prototype, created on Figma, can be explored below.
